Shopping mall design has distinctive characteristics that set it apart from other types of buildings. Some functional principles even contradict general architectural rules. For example, when it comes to internal circulation, "the shortest route is not always the best one." Architects must design traffic flow in a way that compels shoppers to take the longest and most winding path possible. Specifically, the arrangement of escalators between floors, combined with retail kiosks, must guide pedestrian movement along a meandering route to maximize exposure to all stores. The primary goal is to ensure that every shop, even those tucked away in corners or less prominent areas, receives a steady flow of customers.
